Clinical outcomes of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in patients with gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor
Surgical Endoscopy May 10, 2019
Pih GY, et al. - Researchers sought to identify the clinical outcome of gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) bleeding and analyzed risk factors and prognosis of hemorrhagic GIST evaluating hemostasis methods. Among 697 patients who were histopathologically diagnosed with primary gastric GIST between January 1998 and May 2015, 46 (6.6%) patients had upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB). As per the multivariate analysis, the maximal tumor diameter > 5 cm and Ki-67 positivity were the significant risk factors for gastric GIST bleeding. Significant factors for overall survival of gastric GIST patients comprised age ≥ 60 [hazard ratio (HR) = 8.124], necrosis (HR = 5.093), and bleeding (HR 5.743). For initial hemostasis of hemorrhagic gastric GIST, they suggest endoscopic intervention as an effective method.
