Clinical outcomes of topical bimatoprost for nonsegmental facial vitiligo: A preliminary study
Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology Feb 24, 2021
Kanokrungsee S, et al. - Researchers tested 0.01% bimatoprost solution vs 0.1% tacrolimus ointment, with respect to efficacy and safety in patients suffering from nonsegmental facial vitiligo. Enrolled patients had more than 2 vitiliginous patches on the face. Experts randomly assigned vitiliginous patches to receive topical 0.1% tacrolimus ointment or 0.01% bimatoprost ophthalmic solution, applied twice daily for 12 weeks. By week 12, both groups showed reduction in vitiligo surface area (VSA, cm 2 ) at a statistically significant level vs baseline. However, no statistically significant difference was found between both groups. Findings demonstrated the safety as well as the effectiveness of topical bimatoprost solutions for the treatment of nonsegmental facial vitiligo with comparable results to tacrolimus ointment. It can be given consideration as an alternative treatment for facial vitiligo.
