Clinical outcomes after isolated pelvic failure in cervical cancer patients treated with definitive radiation
Gynecologic Oncology Jun 02, 2019
Lin AJ, et al. - Using a tertiary academic center database, researchers assessed clinical outcomes in cervical cancer patients with isolated pelvic failure post-definitive radiation with brachytherapy boost. Of overall 607 treated consecutive patients, 67(11%) had isolated pelvic failure. Of these 67 patients, salvage surgery was received by 28(42%), chemotherapy alone by 17(25%), and neither surgery nor chemotherapy by 22(33%). The risk of failing distantly following isolated pelvic failure was higher among patients who had pelvic and para-aortic nodal disease at initial presentation; this should be kept in mind while counseling patients on aggressive surgical salvage. A prolonged survival post-isolated pelvic failure was reported in relation to surgical salvage.
