Clinical outcome of Guillain-Barre syndrome after prolonged mechanical ventilation
Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry Apr 14, 2018
van den Berg B, et al. - This study examined the frequency, clinical course and long-term outcome with the ability to walk unaided in patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation (MV) (longer than 2 months). Findings disclosed that subjects requiring prolonged MV presented with a lower Medical Research Council sum score and more frequent bulbar involvement and inexcitable nerves compared with shorter ventilated patients. A connection was brought to light between prolonged ventilation in GBS with poor prognosis. Nevertheless, patients requiring prolonged ventilation could exhibit slow yet persistent recovery for years and even reach the ability to walk and live independently.
