Clinical laboratory parameters associated with severe or critical novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19): A systematic review and meta-analysis
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Oct 07, 2020
Moutchia J, Pokharel P, Kerri A, et al. - Researchers investigated clinical laboratory parameters that may aid in predicting severe or critical COVID-19. Searching MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL and Google Scholar databases from 2019 through April 18, 2020, systematically and reviewing bibliographies of eligible studies, relevant systematic reviews, and the medRxiv pre-print server, they identified 45 studies in 6 countries for inclusion. Per findings, relatively increased markers of innate immune response, decreased markers of adaptive immune response, and increased markers of tissue damage and major organ failure characterize severe or critical COVID-19 vs non-severe COVID-19. They suggest utility of these markers for recognizing severe or critical disease and monitoring clinical course of COVID-19.
