Clinical importance of histopathological inflammation in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia: A prospective study of 222 patients
Current Urology Aug 26, 2017
Meert T et al. – This prospective study evaluated the relationship between severity of histopathological prostatic inflammation with lower urinary tract symptoms and prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels. PSA and the active or chronic inflammation demonstrated a weak correlation. In addition, no correlation was found between the active or chronic histopathological inflammation and International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS).
Methods
- A total of 222 patients eligible for transurethral resection of the prostate were included in the study.
- Patients with proven urinary tract infection or prostate cancer were excluded.
- Histopathological examination was carried out to determine the presence and severity of inflammation.
Results
- Mean preoperative PSA levels of 4.7 ± 5.4 ng/mL and IPSS of 15.7 ± 6.9 was demonstrated.
- Patients showed mean peak flow of 10.7 ± 6.5 mL/s and mean resected prostate weight of 39.4 ± 27.3 g.
