Clinical implication of ‘obesity paradox’ in elderly patients with acute myocardial infarction
Heart, Lung, and Circulation Oct 07, 2020
Kim HT, Jung SY, Nam JH, et al. - In this study, the clinical effect of BMI in very old patients (≥ 80 years) with AMI was explored. Between November 2005 and March 2012, researchers examined 2,489 AMI individuals aged ≥ 80 years from the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry and the Korea Working Group on Myocardial Infarction registries. Individuals were categorized into four groups based on their BMI: underweight (n=301), normal weight (n=1,150), overweight (n=890), and obese (n=148). The primary outcome included a major adverse cardiovascular event, a composite of cardiac death, myocardial infarction, target lesion revascularization, and target vessel revascularisation. In elderly patients, body mass index with acute myocardial infarction was significantly correlated with coronary care unit stay and clinical cardiovascular outcomes.
