Clinical features of hepatocellular carcinoma in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease patients without advanced fibrosis

Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology May 28, 2019

Kodama K, et al. - Via comparing clinical features, survival rates, and recurrence rates between 104 hepatocellular carcinoma associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD-HCC) patients [35 without (F0–2) and 69 with advanced fibrosis (F3–F4)] diagnosed between January 2000 and December 2016, researchers examined the clinical characteristics of HCC in NAFLD patients without advanced fibrosis. According to results, male gender, lower serum albumin, and advanced fibrosis were the risk factors of recurrence. In men, without advanced fibrosis, HCC tended to develop from NAFLD. While tumor size is significantly higher in NAFLD-HCC without advanced fibrosis, the rate of recurrence is significantly lower. In these cases, surgical therapy should be taken into consideration.
