Clinical features and prognosis of surgically proven constrictive pericarditis after orthotopic heart transplantation
The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation Feb 06, 2021
Lloyd JW, Oh JK, Daly RC, et al. - For constrictive pericarditis (CP), pericardiectomy is the definitive treatment, however, there are limited data on CP after orthotopic heart transplantation (OHT). Hence, researchers performed a retrospective review of 8 cases of surgically proven CP after OHT undergoing pericardiectomy. Postpericardiectomy 30-day mortality of 13% (1 patient) was observed. After pericardiectomy, they observed median survival of 2.3 years and 5-year survival of 29%. Overall, findings suggest that CP after OHT represents a subset of patients with CP with high morbidity and mortality, and there is a necessity for multimodality assessment for its diagnosis. They indicated poor long-term survival despite a relatively low surgical mortality.
