Clinical features and outcomes of pregnancy-related acute aortic dissection
JAMA Cardiology Jan 14, 2021
Braverman AC, Mittauer E, Harris KM, et al. - Given the risk for pregnancy-related aortic dissection among women with aortopathy conditions, researchers sought to determine the clinical characteristics, imaging features, and outcomes in women who experience aortic dissection related to pregnancy. They conducted a cohort study including data from the International Registry of Acute Aortic Dissection (IRAD) (February 1, 1998, to February 28, 2018). Pregnancy-related aortic dissection was reported in a total of 29 women (mean [SD] age, 32 [6] years), which represented 0.3% of all aortic dissections and 1% of aortic dissection in women in the IRAD. An underlying aortopathy condition was reported in most women, however, there were many who were previously unaware of this diagnosis. Overall findings suggest the rare occurrence of aortic dissection as a complication of pregnancy; its occurrence was noted in women with aortopathy conditions. Frequently, these conditions are not identified until after the aortic dissection occurs.
