Clinical features and outcomes of patients with malignancy and Takotsubo syndrome: Observations from the International Takotsubo Registry
Journal of the American Heart Association Jul 24, 2019
Cammann VL, et al. - Using the International Takotsubo Registry, researchers compared takotsubo syndrome (TTS) patients with vs without malignancy, in terms of clinical features and short- and long-term outcomes. Compared with those without malignancy, older age, higher liklihood of having physical triggers, and a lower likelihood of having emotional triggers were observed in patients with malignancy. Higher long-term mortality, and a similar short-term outcome, was found in patients with malignancy vs those without. Also, TTS patients with malignancies had long-term mortality that was similar to that seen in acute coronary syndrome patients with malignancies, as seen in a subanalysis. A link with malignancy was demonstrated by a substantial number of TTS patients. An increased risk for TTS might be conferred by history of malignancy, and thus, considering appropriate screening for malignancy in these patients is recommended.
