Clinical factors associated with the recovery of cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Cardiovascular Diabetology Mar 14, 2019
Jun JE, et al. - In this retrospective longitudinal study, clinical factors associated with cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) recovery were identified among 759 type 2 diabetes patients with CAN but without cardiovascular disease at baseline. According to the Ewing’s method, various categories of CAN were defined: early (one abnormal parasympathetic test), definite (two or more abnormal parasympathetic tests), severe (definite plus orthostatic hypotension), or atypical (early plus orthostatic hypotension or orthostatic hypotension alone). They assessed for partial or complete CAN recovery. A total of 227 subjects (29.9%) experienced CAN recovery, and complete recovery was reported in 1.2% (n = 9). In participants, the most important factor in CAN recovery, including recovery from the definite or severe stage, was younger age. Other factors that showed significant associations with CAN recovery were HbA1c reduction, body weight reduction, no concurrent micro/macroalbuminuria, and shorter duration of diabetes.
