Clinical factors associated with suicide risk independent of depression in persons with epilepsy
Seizure - European Journal of Epilepsy Aug 15, 2020
Kim SJ, Kim HJ, Jeon JY, et al. - In persons with epilepsy, researchers evaluated if factors related to epilepsy are correlated with a risk of suicide, independent of depression, in this cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 212 adults (52.4 % men) with epilepsy who were divided into two age groups (≤ 40 vs > 40 years). Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview was used to measure suicidality and depression. The risk of suicide was reported in 31.6 % of participants while the risk of depression was reported in 22.2 % of participants. Independent of depression, and a past or family history of psychiatric disorders, antiepileptic drug load ≥ 1 has been significantly associated with a risk of suicide. Independent of current depression, usage in the younger group and high seizure frequency (≥ 1 per month) in the older group were associated with a risk of suicide.
