Clinical determinants of plasma cardiac biomarkers in patients with stable chest pain
Heart Jun 07, 2019
Bing R, et al. - In this prespecified substudy from the randomized Scottish Computed Tomography of the Heart trial, researchers identified the clinical and cardiac determinants of biomarkers troponin and B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) in patients (aged 18–75 years) with suspected stable angina. They identified age and atherosclerotic burden as independent predictors of both biomarkers. Independent predictors of increased troponin included male sex, left ventricular mass, and systolic blood pressure. In contrast, independent predictors of increased BNP included female sex and left ventricular volume. Overall, the authors noted an association of troponin and BNP with coronary atherosclerosis. However, these biomarkers have important sex differences and distinct and contrasting associations with CT-determined left ventricular mass and volume.
