Clinical course and management of dengue in children admitted to hospital: A 5 years prospective cohort study in Jakarta, Indonesia
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Jan 16, 2020
Karyanti MR, Uiterwaal CSPM, Hadinegoro SR, et al. - In view of a globally rising incidence of dengue, and considering that a benefit would be afforded to patients, clinicians and care facilities if progression to dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) or dengue shock syndrome (DSS) in cases with clinically suspected dengue could be determined at admission by reliable predictors, researchers examined a cohort of 496 children admitted with clinically suspected dengue at a tertiary care hospital in Jakarta, Indonesia, to assess the clinical course as well as disease consequence of admitted patients, and to estimate the burden of dengue cases hospitalized over time. Findings revealed the progression to DHF or DSS occurred in approximately a third of children admitted to tertiary care with clinically suspected dengue fever. A significant link with clinical progression was displayed by only fever duration among routinely obtained parameters at admission. This highlights the unpredictability of the dengue disease course from parameters currently routinely obtained.
