Clinical characteristics, treatment and outcomes of adnexal torsion in pregnant women: A retrospective study
BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth Aug 28, 2020
Wang YX, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective study of 82 pregnant women with surgically confirmed adnexal torsion (AT) in order to assess the clinical characteristics, treatment and outcomes of adnexal torsion in pregnant women. Observations suggest a rare occurrence of AT during pregnancy. The main symptoms are acute pelvic pain, pelvic mass and nausea and vomiting. A high false-negative rate was reported with doppler flow examination. According to the clinical suspicion of AT, decision regarding surgery should be made as soon as possible. Based on outcomes, they suggest laparoscopy to be a safe approach to diagnose and treat AT. Preservation of ovarian function as well as reduction in the recurrence rate were achieved with conservative surgery, including detorsion with cystectomy or fenestration.
