Clinical characteristics, risk factors, immune status and prognosis of secondary infection of sepsis: A retrospective observational study
BMC Anesthesiology Oct 24, 2019
Chen Y, Hu Y, Zhang J, et al. - In this four-year retrospective analysis, researchers determined clinical features, risk factors, immune status as well as prognosis of secondary infection of sepsis. This inquiry was held at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, and included septic patients who were admitted between January, 2014 and January, 2018. Of 297 septic patients enrolled, 92 developed 150 cases of secondary infections. Secondary infection most commonly developed in the respiratory tract and the most commonly isolated pathogen was Acinetobacter baumanii. An increased risk of secondary infection resulting from urinary and deep venous catheterization was reported, wherein a possible role of underlying immunosuppression was also suggested. The influence of secondary infection on the prognosis of septic patients was evident, as well as secondary infection led to the prolongation of in-hospital length of stay.
