Clinical characteristics of people with cystic fibrosis and frequent fungal infection
Pediatric Pulmonology Oct 28, 2021
Poore TS, Meier M, Towler E, et al. - Via this retrospective study, researchers sought to characterize people with cystic fibrosis (CF) with frequent detection of fungi from airway samples and describe their clinical outcomes.
A total of 294 individuals meeting the inclusion criteria were identified; 62% were classified as rare and 38% as frequent fungi during baseline.
Observations revealed frequent occurrence of P. aeruginosa and S. maltophilia co-infection in correlation with fungal infection in CF; this was observed even in those without allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA).
Worse outcomes are recorded in individuals with frequent fungi and ABPA, indicating the potential contribution of fungi to CF pulmonary disease.
