Clinical characteristics of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis in patients with and without bronchiectasis
Journal of Asthma Apr 04, 2021
Wang S, Zhang J, Zhang C, et al. - Researchers assessed as well as compared the clinical features of both forms of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA): serologic ABPA (ABPA-S) and ABPA with central bronchiectasis (ABPA-CB), in this retrospective case series study. They analyzed 93 patients, including 74 ABPA-CB cases and 19 ABPA-S cases. Misdiagnosis happened in 54.8%, with ABPA-S vs ABPA-CB more likely to have been misdiagnosed as asthma. The presence of obstructive ventilation dysfunction and mixed ventilation dysfunction was identified in 21 patients (22.6%) and 16 patients (17.2%), respectively. Findings revealed that clinical features were mostly similar between ABPA-CB and ABPA-S. A relatively lower immunological activity level was evident in ABPA-S compared with ABPA-CB but the former was still immunologically active and could develop bronchiectasis.
