Clinical characteristics, major morbidity, and mortality in trauma-related pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome
Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Feb 13, 2020
Nair AB, et al. - In this investigation involving 646 trauma patients age 0 to 18 years old inclusive, researchers ascertained the presence, central features, and effect on major morbidity and mortality of trauma-related pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome. All independent statistical predictors of new or progressive multiple organ dysfunction syndrome were the presence of trauma-related pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome, younger age, and worse injury severity. According to this retrospective review of a prospective trauma database, among the pediatric trauma population, pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome is present. Findings suggested an association of trauma-related pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome with eight times the organ dysfunction and five times the mortality vs patients without trauma-related pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome, but research is lacking in this field.
