Clinical characteristics, histopathology, and treatment outcomes of Pythium keratitis: A retrospective cohort study
Clinical Ophthalmology May 04, 2021
Puangsricharern V, Chotikkakamthorn P, Tulvatana W, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers identified factors associated with the prognosis in Pythium keratitis. The records of 25 patients (26 eyes) diagnosed with Pythium keratitis at a referral institution have been reviewed. The demographic and clinical features, treatment, microbiological diagnosis, histopathological features, and outcomes have been recorded. In patients with Pythium keratitis, the risk of globe removal increased with age, delayed initial topical antifungal or antibiotic treatment, advanced disease at presentation, and dense Pythium hyphae infiltration of the cornea. Early detection and treatment are critical for eradicating the infection.
