Clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of patients with advanced germ cell tumor treated at a tertiary cancer center in Brazil
Journal of Global Oncology Feb 26, 2019
Vasconcellos VF, et al. - In this retrospective analysis of 300 patients with advanced germ cell tumors (aGCT) treated at a tertiary cancer center in Brazil, researchers assessed progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) by International Germ Cell Consensus Classification Group (IGCCCG) from 2000 to 2015. The median age of the study population was 28 years. They reported 57%, 18.3%, and 24.7% cases of good-, intermediate-, and poor-risk disease, respectively, according to the IGCCCG. Median α-fetoprotein levels and human chorionic gonadotropin levels in IGCCCG good-, intermediate-, and poor-risk groups were 2.9, 243, and 3,998 ng/mL; and 0.4, 113, and 301.5 mUI/mL, respectively. Compared with the IGCCCG database, similar outcomes were observed among this cohort of Brazilian patients with aGCT. Slightly inferior PFS and OS were noted in patients with intermediate- and poor-risk aGCT vs contemporary series, most like attributable to a high percentage of patients with poor performance status and less use of high-dose chemotherapy.
