Clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes in a cohort of patients with pyogenic and amoebic liver abscess
BMC Infectious Diseases Jun 10, 2019
Neill L, et al. - Researchers retrospectively reviewed records of 141 patient [132 (93.6%) with pyogenic (PLA) and 9 (6.4%) with amoebic liver abscesses (ALA)] that were diagnosed and treated at a major infectious diseases department in London over 9 years in order to delineate the clinical features of a cohort of patients with liver abscesses. In addition, they examined how clinical, radiological and microbiological findings are correlated with mortality. Outcomes revealed no utility of clinical or radiological features in distinguishing between PLA and ALA, or in identifying the bacterial cause of PLA. However, ALA more commonly noted in young, male patients with a history of travel. Improvement in microbiological diagnosis in culture-negative cases could be achieved with 16S ribosomal RNA analysis of abscess fluid.
