Clinical characteristics and role of whole-body bone scan in multifocal osteonecrosis
BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders Jan 20, 2019
An YS, et al. - Researchers retrospectively (both visually and quantitatively) analyzed 254 subjects with osteonecrosis (ON) confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/X-rays to investigate the clinical aspects and efficiency of whole-body bone scans (WBBS) in cases with multifocal ON. They frequently observed comorbidities, corticosteroid use, and treatment with immunosuppressive agents in candidates with multifocal ON and observed associated with frequency of the disease occurrence. They also found younger age associated with multifocal ON. The MRI Association Research Circulation Osseous (ARCO) classification was not found related to photon defects in the bone scans of individuals with femoral ON. Conclusively, WBBS might be suggested as a supplementary tool to examine ON cases with risk factors.
