Clinical characteristics and risk factors of cerebral hemorrhage in patients with occult malignant tumors

Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment Aug 21, 2021

Zhao Y, Xie H, Pan C, et al. - In cerebral hemorrhage cases, the likely predictors of the risk of occult malignancies are: no history of hypertension, lobar cerebral hemorrhage, and coagulation dysfunction.

  • A retrospective study with a tumor group and a control group.

  • The tumor group comprised 23 patients with occult malignant tumors with the first onset of cerebral hemorrhage, and the control group included 92 patients without occult tumors in the same period.

  • By propensity score matching, no statistical differences in age and gender existed between both groups.

  • Fewer patients with hypertension and significantly decreased neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio were noted in the tumor group vs the control group.

  • A greater number of patients with the bleeding sites located in the lobar regions and a higher coagulation dysfunction was present in the tumor group vs the control group.

  • By receiver operating characteristic curve, the area under the curve of the three-index combined diagnosis (absence of history of hypertension, lobar cerebral hemorrhage, and coagulation dysfunction) was 0.748.

  • C-statistic analysis also revealed the same result.
