BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Sep 19, 2020
Takemoto MLS, Menezes MO, Andreucci CB, et al. - Via performing a cross‐sectional study based on secondary surveillance database analysis, researchers sought to describe clinical characteristics of pregnant and postpartum women with severe COVID‐19 in Brazil. In addition, they investigated risk factors for mortality. Among 978 assessed Brazilian pregnant and postpartum women who were notified as COVID‐19 Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) cases, 124 maternal deaths occurred; this corresponds to a case fatality rate of 12.7% among COVID‐19 ARDS cases in the obstetric population. The identified risk factors were symptoms onset at postpartum and presence of comorbidities such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. While white ethnicity was identified to have a protective effect.
