Clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of malignant tumors involving pterygopalatine fossa
Head & Neck Feb 05, 2020
Woo HJ, et al. - Via reviewing 57 individuals who had curative surgery for malignant tumor involving pterygopalatine fossa (PPF), researchers identified the clinical features and prognostic factors of malignancies involving the PPF. Findings suggested that PPF-involving malignant tumors have complex pathologies and poor prognosis. Data reported that the rates for three-year local control (LC), five-year disease-free survival (DFS) and five-year overall survival (OS), respectively, were 55.4%, 34.5%, and 52.7%. Predictors for poor OS were perineural invasion (PNI) of the maxillary nerve with facial numbness (symptomatic V2 PNI) and cranial involvement. In addition, symptomatic V2 PNI was a significant predictor for poor LC and DFS. Asymptomatic V2 PNI patients had significantly better LC and DFS vs symptomatic patients within the subgroup analysis of patients with pathologically confirmed V2 PNI.
