Clinical characteristics and prognosis of bacteraemia during postoperative intra-abdominal infections
Critical Care Jul 16, 2018
Alqarni A, et al. - In this prospective analysis of all consecutive postoperative intra-abdominal infection (PIAI) patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) between 1999 and 2014, researchers evaluated the clinical and microbiological characteristics of patients and the prognostic significance of bacteraemia in these subjects. They compared bacteraemic patients (at least one positive blood culture in the 24 h preceding/following surgery) with non-bacteraemic patients. They found bacteraemic patients more frequently had immunosuppression and cancer, while both groups were similar with respect to the time to reoperation, site, and cause of PIAI. The overall management of patients with PIAI remained unaffected by bacteraemia and hence no specific management was recommended for bacteraemic patients.
