Clinical characteristics and etiologies of bronchiectasis in Korean children: A multicenter retrospective study
Respiratory Medicine Apr 11, 2019
Lee E, et al. - In this retrospective review, researchers determined the causes as well as clinical characteristics of bronchiectasis in Korean children. Overall 387 cases (53.5% of the patients were boys) with a mean age at diagnosis 9.2 ± 5.1 years were analyzed. Preexisting respiratory infection (55.3%), post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans (14.3%), pulmonary tuberculosis (12.3%), and heart diseases (5.6%) constituted the most common underlying etiologies of bronchiectasis. Chronic cough (68.0%), recurrent pneumonia (36.4%), fever (31.1%), and dyspnea (19.7%) were documented as common initial presenting symptoms. Left lower lobe (53.9%), right lower lobe (47.1%) and right middle lobe (40.2%) were most predominantly affected. In cases with interstitial lung disease-associated bronchiectasis, the lowest forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) levels was detected. Based on these findings, they recommended clinicians to strongly consider bronchiectasis in children with chronic cough and recurrent pneumonia.
