Clinical characteristics and associated systemic diseases in patients with esophageal “absent contractility”-A clinical algorithm

Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Feb 16, 2019

Laique S, et al. - In this retrospective, multicenter study, researchers evaluated the clinical characteristics and associated systemic diseases in patients diagnosed with absent contractility in accordance with version 3.0 of the Chicago Classification, enabling them to propose a diagnostic algorithm for their etiologic testing. Investigators found that most practitioners use the term “absent contractility” interchangeably with “scleroderma esophagus.” However, only 63% of patients with absent contractility had systemic sclerosis (SSc). Overall, 20% of patients had another systemic autoimmune rheumatologic disease and 16% had a nonrheumatologic etiology for absent contractility. These patients, therefore, need to seek an alternative diagnosis. For their etiological assessment, they propose an algorithm.
