Clinical benefit of surveillance after resection of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma: A systematic review and meta-analysis
European Journal of Surgical Oncology May 14, 2021
Halle-Smith JM, Hall L, Daamen LA, et al. - By performing a systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers assessed the worth of routine surveillance following resection of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). They conducted a literature review with 10 studies, and five studies were eligible for meta-analysis (1596 patients). As per findings, detection of more patients at an asymptomatic stage appeared to be achieved with routine surveillance post-surgery for PDAC. Findings from non-randomised trials also indicate likely superior treatment rates and survival in cases where recurrence was identified when asymptomatic. As such, the results indicate that improvement in patient outcomes may be conferred by routine surveillance, although a properly performed trial would be needed to discuss concerns that several sources of bias may be impacting these results.
