Clinical and histopathologic features of colorectal adenocarcinoma in Crohn’s disease
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Jul 14, 2018
Galata C, et al. - In patients with Crohn’s disease (CD), researchers evaluated the histopathologic features of colorectal carcinomas (CRC). For this investigation, the medical records of subjects who had surgery for CRC were analyzed, and those with a history of CD identified. In addition, the data of histologic classification and microsatellite instability (MSI) status of the tumor were reviewed. Compared to patients with sporadic CRC, CRCs with signet ring cell and mucinous components were much more common in patients with CD. The study findings suggested that CRC in CD is its own entity with own unique histopathologic and molecular features. This might impact diagnosis and therapy of CRC in CD in the future and also present new factors to identify subjects with an increased risk for developing CRC in CD.
