Clinical and epidemiological variability in severe sepsis: An ecological study
Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health Apr 15, 2018
Vakkalanka JP, et al. - Researchers analyzed clinical and epidemiological trends of severe sepsis among patients presenting to the Emergency Department with severe sepsis or septic shock. The state-wide hospital administrative database was used. Relative to those in medically underserved areas (MUAs), 85+ yo in non-MUAs had a 44% increase in incidence rate (IR) in 2005, this difference rose to 74% by 2013. In non-MUAs, 1.6 times greater mortality rates were noted among 85+ yo. Overall, geographic variance in the incidence of sepsis was reported. This heterogeneity may be explained by access to healthcare, a proposed mechanism.
