International Journal of Dermatology Oct 23, 2019
dos Santos Martins CP, et al. - Since vitiligo is an acquired pigmentary disorder affecting about 0.5–2% of the world's population, and 25% of cases begin before 10 years of age, researchers assessed the clinical and epidemiological features of childhood vitiligo. They conducted a retrospective chart review of 701 patients under the age of 18 in which disease onset occurred before 13 years of age. Generalized vitiligo was the most common subtype and the average age of disease onset was 5.9 years. Head/neck was the most affected initial site. The data presented in this work showed a significant difference between segmental vitiligo and nonsegmental vitiligo regarding the age of onset, Koebner phenomenon, hypothyroidism, anti-TPO antibodies, psoriasis family history, and halo nevus. Findings suggested that vitiligo in childhood has its own features. Vitiligo has different characteristics in different subtypes. The research presents a large number of patients that help to elucidate the peculiarities of childhood vitiligo in the population of Brazil.
