Clinical and epidemiologic characteristics of pertussis in hospitalized children: A prospective and standardized long-term surveillance study
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Sep 23, 2020
Zumstein H, et al. - In Switzerland, a long tradition is to report nationwide hospitalizations due to pertussis in children and it was resumed in 2013 with the aim to ascertain the effects of pertussis immunization in pregnancy introduced in 2013. Using data from the Swiss Pediatric Surveillance Unit, they identified 213 of 294 cases as valid cases of pertussis. Of these, 79% were reported in < 6-month-old infants. Vaccination during pregnancy was received by only 4 (2%) of 168 mothers of infants < 6 months; 112 patients had precise records of immunization, of these only 14 (12%) had completed their primary series and were up-to-date for age. Findings suggest that although the introduction of immunization against pertussis in pregnancy has led to a decline in cases, control of the disease remains challenging, mainly due to failure to vaccinate rather than vaccine failure.
