Clinical and epidemiologic characteristics of pertussis in hospitalized children: A prospective and standardized long-term surveillance study
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Dec 14, 2020
Zumstein J, et al. - For controlling success and shortcomings of vaccination programs, the key necessity is surveillance of incidence and severity of pertussis followed by adaptations of recommendations if required. In Switzerland, nationwide reporting of hospitalizations due to pertussis in children has a long tradition and resumed in 2013 to determine how pertussis immunization in pregnancy, introduced in 2013, has affected. Reporting of all patients < 16 years of age hospitalized with suspected or proven pertussis have been done to the Swiss Pediatric Surveillance Unit since 2013. Among 294 cases, 213 were valid cases of pertussis. Of these, 168 (79%) occurred in < 6-month-old infants. Observations revealed a decline in cases linked with the introduction of immunization against pertussis in pregnancy, however, challenges remain concerning the control of the disease, mainly due to failure to vaccinate rather than vaccine failure.
