Clinical analysis of pediatric thyroid cancer: A single medical institution experience of 18 years
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Aug 09, 2019
Byeon HK, Kim SB, Oh HS, et al. - Researchers retrieved data of 83 eligible pediatric thyroid cancer patients in order to assess the risk factors of recurrence as well as their treatment outcomes. Most of the studied patients were girls and adolescents aged ≥ 13 years. Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) was the most common pathology (n = 74). Higher rate of lymph node metastasis and extrathyroidal extension were noted in those with PTC tumors > 1 cm vs those with tumors ≤ 1 cm. All patients survived with nine PTC patients who displayed treatment failure. Significant prognostic value of age, tumor size, multifocality, lateral lymph node metastasis, and postoperative thyroglobulin levels was observed for disease recurrence. In view of the several distinctive features, they recommend considering pediatric thyroid cancer as a specific disease entity with respect to the thyroid cancer in adults.
