Clinical analysis of 15 cases of gallbladder neuroendocrine carcinoma and comparison with gallbladder adenocarcinoma using a propensity score matching
Cancer Management and Research Mar 05, 2020
Yan S, Wang Y, Chen X, et al. - Researchers report the clinicopathological characteristics as well as the prognosis of gallbladder neuroendocrine carcinoma (GB-NEC), by analyzing 15 cases of GB-NEC and 171 cases of gallbladder adenocarcinoma (GB-ADC) recruited from two tertiary medical centers. They compared the prognosis of GB-NEC and GB-ADC by applying a propensity score matching in a 1:2 ratio. For GB-NEC, the 1-, 2-, and 3-year overall survival (OS) were estimated to be 60.0%, 38.8%, and 31.1%, respectively. The median survival time was identified to be 20.4 months. Significantly shorter survival was noted in patients with lymph node metastasis vs those without. Better OS was experienced by patients of Nevin stage III vs those of Nevin stage IV. Overall, experts concluded that Nevin staging aids grouping patients of GB-NEC with varying prognosis and the lymph node metastasis is a strong negative prognostic factor for OS. In propensity score analysis, worse OS was shown for GB-NEC, vs GB-ADC, even with a similar stage and management.
