Clincopathological characteristics and treatment outcomes of oral leukoplakia by carbon dioxide laser excision in the elderly patients
Head & Neck Feb 05, 2020
Yang SW, et al. - Through statistically analyzing the demographic data and histopathological outcomes of the patients (age ≥ 65) who received carbon dioxide laser surgery for OL from 2002 to 2017, researchers examined the clincopathological characteristics and treatment outcomes of OL in the elderly individuals. Participants in the study were 69 patients (53 males and 16 females, with a mean age of 71.2 ± 4.9). In the univariate analysis, the factors associated with postoperative recurrence were found to be morphology, pathology, and area. Among these factors, the independent predictive factors for recurrence in the multivariate logistic regression model were pathology and area. In 8 of 69 individuals, a malignant transformation occurred. The authors concluded that the two prognostic factors for postoperative recurrence were pathological high-risk dysplasia and OL area.
