Clear colonoscopy as a surveillance tool in the prediction and reduction of advanced neoplasms: A randomized controlled trial
Surgical Endoscopy Sep 15, 2020
Zhang Q, Shen Y, Xu J, et al. - Researchers examined if the newly developed clear colonoscopy procedure aids in prediction and reduction of the recurrence of advanced neoplasms (ANs) in postpolypectomy patients. From 2006 to 2010, either clear colonoscopy surveillance (CCS) or routine colonoscopy surveillance (RCS) was performed in a total of 1,350 participants with colorectal neoplasm. Surveillance colonoscopy at 3 and 5 years showed that the CCS group had AN incidence of 1.7%, which was lower than 4.7% in patients belonging to the RCS group for both high- and low-risk patients. Hence, post-polypectomy patients show reduced incidence of ANs in correlation to undergoing surveillance based on clear colonoscopy. In the prediction of the recurrence of ANs, an important factor is the number of repeat examinations needed for a clear colonoscopy.
