Classification of postoperative behavior disturbances in preschool children: A qualitative study
Paediatric Anaesthesia Aug 07, 2019
Lopez U, Martin J, van Assche M, et al. - In this study including preschool children (1-5 years old; 38 boys) who received general anesthesia for surgery, researchers intended to describe the various dimensions involved in behavioral disturbances after surgery using a qualitative analysis applied for the first time to these symptoms. Ten days postsurgery, they interrogated 57 parents of such children. They determined behavioral disturbances classically reported in preschool children, via semi-structured interviews. Both positive and negative postoperative changes were reported by parents. Four main groups of negative changes were externalizing and internalizing problem behaviors, feeding sleeping disruption and somatic problems, each including various sub-classes. Within these groups, change in symptoms distribution was seen in 5 years old children vs younger children. In preschool children, postoperative disturbances were found to be heterogeneous.
