Clarithromycin for the treatment of adult chronic rhinosinusitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology May 03, 2019
Huang Z, et al. - In this systematic review, researchers tested the safety and effectiveness of oral clarithromycin for the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Included were 17 studies with 1738 patients. With this combination therapy, the incidence of adverse events did not increase. There was no significant difference between treatment with oral clarithromycin and intranasal steroid spray alone groups in term of symptoms, endoscopic score, and computed tomography score. Adding oral clarithromycin to intranasal steroid spray with or without nasal saline irrigation may be better than using intranasal steroid spray with or without nasal saline irrigation for the treatment of CRS. There is insufficient evidence to confirm that nasal glucocorticoid spray alone can have similar efficacy to oral clarithromycin. High-quality evidence is needed in this area.
