Citrus fruit intake and gastric cancer: The stomach cancer pooling (StoP) project consortium
International Journal of Cancer Jan 24, 2019
Bertuccio P, et al. - Via conducting a one-stage pooled analysis including 6,340 cases and 14,490 controls from 15 case–control studies from the stomach cancer pooling (StoP) project consortium, researchers evaluated and quantified the association between citrus fruit intake and gastric cancer risk. They observed a progressive increase in the favorable effect of citrus fruits until three servings/week; the effects leveled off thereafter. A similar magnitude of the association was noted between cancer sub-sites and histotypes. The data confirmed that citrus fruits and gastric cancer are inversely associated with each other and provided precise estimates of the magnitude of the association. However, studies from America and some previous cohort studies displaying null association prevented the researchers from drawing definite conclusions on any potential protective effect of citrus fruit consumption.
