Citrus fruit intake and gastric cancer: The Stomach cancer Pooling (StoP) project consortium
International Journal of Cancer Dec 13, 2018
Bertuccio P, et al. - Researchers evaluated and quantified the link between citrus fruit consumption and the risk of gastric cancer via performing a one-stage pooled analysis involving 6,340 cases and 14,490 controls from 15 case-control studies from the Stomach cancer Pooling (StoP) Project consortium. They found that the protective effects of citrus fruits progressively increased until 3 servings per week, after which time the effects leveled off. Further data findings confirmed an inverse association between citrus fruit intake and gastric cancer. The investigators noted a similar magnitude of the association of cancer sub-sites with histotype. However, studies from the United States and some previous cohort studies indicated a null association, preventing the researchers from drawing definite conclusions on the protective effect of citrus fruit consumption.
