Circumcision and risk of febrile urinary tract infection in boys with posterior urethral valves: Result of the CIRCUP randomized trial
European Urology Sep 27, 2021
Harper L, Blanc T, Peycelon M, et al. - According to this clinical randomized trial, circumcision significantly reduces the risk of presenting a febrile urinary tract infection (fUTI) in boys with posterior urethral valves (PUVs).
The sample consisted of 91 patients: 49 in group circumcision + antibiotic prophylaxis (CATB) and 42 in group antibiotic prophylaxis alone (ATB).
The likelihood of presenting an fUTI was 20% in group ATB and 3% in group CATB.
The hazard ratio for developing an fUTI within 2 years in the ATB group was 10.3 when compared with the CATB group.
Sixty-four children (70.3%) received a complete follow-up at the age of 2.
