Circulating thrombospondin-2 enhances prediction of malignant intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm

American Journal of Surgery Sep 13, 2018

Simpson RE, et al. - Given the variable malignant potential of Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) are cystic pancreatic lesions, researchers investigated if circulating levels of thrombospondin-2 (THBS2)—an endogenous, anti-angiogenic matrix glycoprotein—could aid in preoperative prediction of malignant IPMN. They assessed circulating levels of THBS2 (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) in preoperative serum/plasma samples procured from patients undergoing surgery. Outcomes suggest a correlation of circulating THBS2 with IPMN dysplasia grade. Despite being not a strong predictor of IPMN grade, THBS2 strengthened prediction models for High-Grade/Invasive IPMN when combined with other clinical/biomarker data.
