Circulating serum level of retinoic acid and hip fractures among postmenopausal women
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Feb 15, 2019
Li XB, et al. - Researchers evaluated the serum levels of retinoic acid (RA), an active form of vitamin A, in postmenopausal women with hip fractures via a case-control study at an Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University. They assessed serum RA levels in 375 postmenopausal women who were diagnosed as having hip fracture and 750 matched controls without fracture. They noted significantly higher serum levels of RA in patients with hip fracture vs controls. As per findings, postmenopausal women display an increased risk of hip fracture in correlation with subclinical higher levels of RA. This was particularly noted with the top quintile of serum RA.
