Circulating serum fatty acid synthase is elevated in patients with diabetes and carotid artery stenosis and is LDL-associated

Atherosclerosis Jun 06, 2019

De Silva GS, et al. - In this study with prospectively enrolled patients with diabetes and without diabetes, researchers assessed the origin of circulating fatty acid synthase (cFAS) as well as its role in diabetes-associated carotid artery stenosis (CAS). Participants were undergoing carotid endarterectomy for CAS. To purify lipoprotein fractions, they used fast protein liquid chromatography. cFAS content and activity were quantified via ELISA. Patients with diabetes and CAS had higher serum cFAS. The source of origin for serum cFAS seemed to be the liver and it seems to be associated with LDL cholesterol. They hypothesized that LDL may act as a carrier for cFAS, which contributes to atheroprogression in carotid arteries of patients with diabetes.
