Circulating microRNA-19b identified from osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture patients increases bone formation

Journal of Bone and Mineral Research Oct 25, 2019

Sun M, Hu L, Wang S, et al. - Researchers sought to find that in osteoporotic patients with vertebral compression fractures, the level of circulating miR-19b was significantly lower than that of healthy controls. In aged ovariectomized mice, the expression level of circulating miR-19b was significantly lower than in young mice. In addition, in aged ovariectomized mice, the osteoporotic bone phenotype was alleviated by the injection of chemically modified miR-19b (agomiR-19b). Findings suggested that circulating miR-19b plays a significant role in enhancing osteoblastogenesis, possibly by regulation of the PTEN/pAKT/Runx2 pathway, and can be a beneficial therapeutic target in bone loss disorders like osteoporosis.
