Circulating adrenomedullin is elevated in gestational diabetes and its role in impaired insulin production by β-cells
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Jan 25, 2019
Dong Y, et al. - In this analysis, researchers assessed whether the circulating levels of adrenomedullin (ADM) in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are elevated and the effects of ADM on insulin synthesis and secretion by human pancreatic β-cells. In pregnant women with GDM, circulating ADM concentrations were elevated. They observed that ADM suppresses the synthesis and secretion of insulin by pancreatic β-cells in vitro. Increased circulating ADM can thus contribute to the defective adaptation of β-cells in diabetic pregnancies, and blocking ADM actions with its antagonists can improve the function of β-cells.
